Diseases of tomato
Growing tomatoes is a bit 'a classic garden where there is no missing this plant, be it outdoors, in greenhouses or on the balcony.
But tomatoes can suffer from several types of diseases and parasites, often due to climatic reasons beyond the control of the gardener.
Since some varieties are more resistant than others, the advice is to buy in stores that you can specify the type best suited to your environment and your mode of cultivation, indoor or outdoor.
It 'important to clearly understand the symptoms of the illness as soon as they occur and act now, before the disease spreads to all your tomato plants and not only, as many other plants such as potatoes, eggplants and peppers are susceptible to the same problems.
Here is a partial list of some common tomato diseases, their symptoms and how to proceed.
Diseases of Tomato - Foliage
- The so-called Rust Rust can affect the leaves, stems and fruits of tomato. Symptoms: brown spots with concentric rings develop in the older leaves. The surrounding leaf surface becomes yellow. The youngest leaves may fall, leaving the fruit exposed to the sun. The tomatoes have black spots.
What to do: Preventive treatment based on specific fungicide (end of May, to be repeated after two weeks). Remove affected plants and collect all the fallen leaves and tomatoes as soon as the first symptoms are visible. This fungus mainly affects the open. - Gray mold of leaves: it concerns only the leaves of the tomato, from older ones. Symptoms: Small brown spots visible on both sides of the leaves. The spots have a gray color brown, but often in the upper part of the leaf assume contours yellow. The central part of the affected areas are dry, the leaves finally fall, the fruits do not develop. It 'a very serious disease.
What to do: A warm, damp and poorly ventilated encourages mattia. Thereby improve air circulation. Remove all the affected plants, give specific product. - Pronospora affects both leaves and fruits of tomatoes, and spreads rapidly. Symptoms: gray spots on the leaves appear that soon wither. A ring of white mildew sometimes develops around the spots, especially in case of rain. Dark streaks may appear on the stems. Dark spots also occur on the fruit, both mature and immature.
What to do: It 's very difficult to repair, better to use preventative products. The diseased plants should be removed immediately. A good air circulation reduces the risk of infestation. - Septoria: And 'sometimes mistaken for the downy mildew. Circular spots on the leaves appear gray with dots in them. Can occur even large brown spots. The older leaves fall almost immediately.
What to do: Remove the affected plants and their parts. Although this is a pretty aggressive disease is fortunately rare. - Verticillium: The leaves turn yellow, have yellowing and necrosis, wilting. The cause is a fungus in the soil, which can affect most of the plants. Crop rotation and selection of resistant varieties is essential. Symptoms also include: wilting of the foliage during the hottest hours of the day and recover during the night spots between veins of older leaves. This fungus inhibits the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients.
What to do: Remove the affected plants and burn them, choose resistant varieties, rotate crops often - Excess Nitrogen: The leaves curl upward, the color may darken.
What to do: Check the dose of fertilizer, watering rinse the substrate with water only.

I have a problem with my tomato plants grown in a container on the balcony, many flowers bend the stem in half and fall what can I do?
June 14th, 2010 at 08:34
It could be the first sign of attack by red spider, double check that the plants.
If parasites are not the fault may be too much water, fertilizer use is not optimal, or excessive administration of mainly copper-based pesticides.
Keep in mind that the fall of the flowers is one of the earliest signs of discomfort of the plant, then in itself 'is not an accurate indicator.
Remember to always remove your 'femminelle', ie the jets that occur between a branch and the other, and when it is necessary to trim the plants.

I planted ten tomato plants, one at a time the plants bend the tip, and the trunk shrinks changing color, and emptied, as if it were a cane for drinking an orange soda. I've already lost four, what can I do? What disease is this? Thanks
June 14th, 2010 at 18:11
There may be necrosis of bone (Pseudomonas corrugata).
The disease occurs when excessive moisture, direct infection, excess nitrogen, changes in temperature.
Unfortunately, when the plants are affected to little avail. Delete immediately before symptoms start those affected, even if the share falls to the ground.
You can try to deliver a product based on copper and improve aeration eliminating stagnant moisture.

Hello, some years crying tomato with great satisfaction, but ... the S.Marzano when mature blacks are inside, the seeds are few and with a black lump ..
Can you help? Thanks

Hello, there may be apical rotting.
It 'a fisiopatia faced by especially tomatoes elongated like the San Marzano, and is due to irregular watering, excess nitrogen (too much fertilizer) and / or calcium deficiency. If you think that watering and fertilization have no problems there may be a draining soil too light and does not allow a good absorption.
Keep in mind that most of the time it is a fact climate and irregular rains alternating with a dry climate leads to poor absorption of calcium. The affected plants unfortunately do not heal easily, you can try to administer calcium by foliar (spray): un'agricola or to ask a garden center, is a widely popular and easy to find and use.

Hello,
symptoms suggest even the apical rot, then the above applies.

I planted the hearts of beef, there are many fruits, however, near the flower has formed a black spot that becomes increasingly grande.Di what disease is this?
July 13th, 2010 at 10:19
I can not think of a disease that has black spots as a symptom related to flowers and leaves or fruit.
It could be the beginning of an infestation of mold Alternaria type AC (blackness).
Unfortunately, tomatoes are very sensitive and it is very difficult to obtain good yields without the preventive use of verdigris / Bordeaux mixture

I transplanted about 300 tomato plants have grown well and have many fruits, I have previously treated 3 times with copper and sulfur and annacquo other day with spring water in the furrow. Now I understood that for some days than plants that until the day before were suddenly health wither. May depend on what: little or too much water?
July 15th, 2010 at 16:18
The most likely cause, since even the hot these days, is the thirst.
If the cause is just after you'll see watered the plants recover.

I kind of prejudice tomatoes "ox heart" happens to me a particular thing, the plant will turn yellow from the bottom and dies. What can 'be due and what are the remedies? .. with prejudice
July 19th, 2010 at 08:35
Could be Cladosporium or another type of cryptogamic disease, but also a parasitic infestation.
Check that there are no unwelcome guests (aphids, red spider mite, mole crickets) and in the case of using pyrethrum. You can easily locate them using the maps colored (blue and yellow) for sale of agricultural adhesive.
If it's fungus is usually the only solution is prevention with copper sulphate or Bordeaux mixture, but if you do not have flowers and fruits you can try to buy a special solution to be sprayed on the leaves.
Often these problems are due to lack of crop rotation, excessive moisture (be careful to leave space between each plant and another), inadequate watering (not constant, rather than rain or in the furrow, or poor drainage), no prevention (preventive treatment with copper sulphate or similar product).

I planted about 60 tomato plants have grown well, but the fruits show yellowing around the petiole more or less extended, the remaining fruit ripens and rots. The yellow is always very tough and should never be ripe. The problem is both to the hearts of the perineal ox. Thanks renato
August 18th, 2010 at 09:03
hello,
probably is a problem related to excessive sun exposure, and / or a lack of potassium.
However, symptoms can appear similar berries affected by a virus (TSWV said, stands for Tomato spotted wilt virus).
The virus is carried by insects and is not only common in intensive cultivation of tomatoes.
Here is a picture of plant affected:

prejudice from two seasons cultivate a small garden planted tomatoes and put in the Heart of Ox and Cigliegino. My problem is that, during the maturation phase, the tomatoes for a third of the fruit, starting from where they are attached to the plant, remain green or turn yellow but fail to mature. The cigliegini also detach themselves from the plant, only to grazing them, they open and rot.
Last year I put a drip irrigation system, this year I water every day to personally hand.
I'd like to know if a disease or that I'm committing error. Thank you for your availability.
August 19th, 2010 at 15:45
Hello,
if there are no visible symptoms on the leaves or the frame can be a problem akin to the last, so excessive sun exposure or, if nearby there are intensive crops (even of different plants) virus.
September 1st, 2010 at 17:46
Hello, the question is this, my tomatoes have been affected by a disease that made them blacks become more parts, plants have become black in spots, and I had to remove them all and not mature. I wonder if the party was still red at sight can be consumed or is harmful?
September 2nd, 2010 at 08:48
When in doubt always best avoided.
maybe it does not hurt, but it is worth risking?

hello all,
I live in India at Mumbai and buy vegetables and good 'really hard to use because "crime" of pesticides.
However, I found a rather expensive Organic Market where shopping .... all about a week ago I bought in this market tomatoes and now find them by opening the refrigerator covered with yellow spots. I wanted to know whether this was due to the use of any pesticide or not.
thanks
November 29th, 2010 at 14:46
Hello,
is not easy to determine because of the yellow spots, but it is hardly attributable to pesticides.

Last year my tomatoes have become sick because of an insect like a bug, not green but red dots neri.Sapete advise me what to do because it does not happen again this year paving what?
thanks
April 11th, 2011 at 10:18
hello,
from the description it could be Crioceris (PHOTO: http://fotoalbum.virgilio.it/leonardo.melchionda/insetti/coleoptera/criocera.html ).
When there is an infestation in the course you have to remove by hand adults and larvae, helping with applications of pyrethrum spray.
A preventive measure you can try spraying the plants with bitter strong tea (one tea spoon of cooked long in one liter of water). Filters and make cool completely before use.
Good luck

Good morning,
I have a problem with my tomato plants. It 's already known that the second year after flowering (before they complete the fruit) on the stalk should go and bear fruit appears which causes a yellowing of the fall of the same at the slightest movement. I noticed on the plants alas the presence of whitefly and I found the same problem on the eggplant and zucchini (courgettes on the yellowing affects the development of the fruit that remains small, shriveled, and is as empty). I wanted to know if you think this is precisely the work of the whitefly or if I should look for other causes and if you tell me a remedy, preferably non-chemical. The culture and 'reduced and outdoor, garden, and' unhappy place in position as located to the north, enclosed between two walls, the climate and 'pretty wet and clayey soil (well I'm trying to do half miracle).
Thanks in advance for the help.
May 24th, 2011 at 07:52
Hello,
Unfortunately, infestations of white fly, especially if massive, open the door to other diseases, such as molds and fungi.
The defense is made difficult by the fact that insecticides are effective in adults but not usually on the eggs.
In greenhouse biological control, but may use the pool, in a small garden like yours, the only solution is to require a chemical-specific and hope to salvage, sort of infestation already so extensive.
Not give up though, and congratulations on your perseverance

May 30th, 2011 at 12:50
hello, could be too much nitrogen fertilizer or even stress (irregular watering, too much exposure to the sun / wind)
May 30th, 2011 at 12:57
hello, if you see other symptoms may be rotting apical, often due to irregular watering (too frequent, too rich, too diverse to each other in terms of quantity and time).
It 'a widespread problem in crops outdoors where climate control is minimal.
Delete the affected fruits, administering calcium (perhaps a product in cans) and tries to regulate irrigation.
Good luck!
June 12th, 2011 at 16:57
I HAVE IN THE TOMATO PLANT LEAVES ARE ATTACHED TO OR FROM OR septoria late blight. Having them treated with fungicide cupric BUT WITH LOW INCOME, ASK IF THE FRUITS THAT ARE NOT been affected MATURATION AND JOINTS, YOU CAN EAT OR HAVE PROBLEMS VI.
June 13th, 2011 at 15:53
Better to throw it all away.
June 19th, 2011 at 14:48
Good morning, we planted a cherry tomato plant.
The plant grows up and has done some tomatoes, but there are growths on the trunk and bubbonate hard, yellowish, especially in the lower trunk.
That problem could be?
Also born 4-5 flowers on each branch, only one, however, continues to grow, while others rinsecchiscono and fall, leaving only the branch: it is normal?
Thanks
June 20th, 2011 at 15:49
Hello,
when I do not think of a disease or parasite that responds fully to the framework of the symptoms, which is also part of the fall flowers.
Maybe some other readers have any suggestions? Let them have it!
June 25th, 2011 at 16:15
Hi
On May I planted on the balcony of Piantini tomato beef hearts and s. Marzano in different vessels. So far the plants have grown well and are high and appeared many flowers that are then transformed into as many tomatoes.
From a week in this part of many leaves (especially the lower ones) are turning yellow and dropping. And also some tomatoes have begun to produce a brown stain on the bottom.
What can it be? Any advice?
Thanks in advance
June 27th, 2011 at 09:21
Hello,
it could be rotting apical, read the previous comments for more information.
Good luck!
June 27th, 2011 at 10:55
Good morning
I planted tomatoes on the balcony and some days some leaves have small holes and some turn yellow and fall.
What should I do, I submit that the plants have already been many tomatoes.
Thanks in advance.
June 29th, 2011 at 09:05
Hello, it could be worms or other parasites visible. Examine the plants well, even on the underside of leaves. You can still do a treatment with neem oil or pyrethrum, or a mixture of home made like this . Good growing!

Good morning,
My tomatoes (Tuscany, 350 m asl) present within the white spots just under the skin. The rest is healthy and also tastes good. I noticed on the first accrued (cencara). Alkaline soil, very loose, facing south; fertilized (in moderation) before transplantation with urea, lime and ash, post transplantation with calcium nitrate

Hello,
unfortunately I can not think of any immediate cause, maybe try to send a photo.
July 22nd, 2011 at 19:42
hello, some days the tomatoes (San Marzano and ribbed, but it happens nor the ox heart or the cherry), have a black background and the leaves turn yellow and wither ..... any advice? thanks
July 24th, 2011 at 13:22
Hello,
I planted some tomato plants and I nototo that in some plants the leaves curl.
I do not use any chemical fertilizer, but only use naturale.Come what should I do? Addition show the fruits of yellowish spots with irregular shape of what you potrbbe treat? Thanks
July 25th, 2011 at 14:32
hello, it's probably rot apical already discussed several times here in the comments: if you go to scorrereli will soon find where it is said. Good luck!
July 25th, 2011 at 14:35
Hello, double check that the plant is not attacked by red spider mite and to be careful watering: it may land too dry or too much sun exposure, however,
July 31st, 2011 at 15:54
Hi,
I would kindly ask your opinion:
is the second consecutive year that some tomato plants after they go into production all'impprovviso begin to wilt and the tree trunk near the base for a short distance, about 2/3 cm., becomes woody brown color by drying the plant slowly but leaving the remaining tomatoes ripen .......
Thank you.
August 1st, 2011 at 12:17
Hello, it would seem a problem of the root. If you have many plants you can sacrifice one to check that the roots are rotten or attacked by some pathogen. Beware of too abundant watering and puddles.
August 17th, 2011 at 06:21
Good day, I can not find the question I had done more than a week ago, I try to do it again.
The white film, hard formed between the inside of the tomato pulp and seeds may depend on what? Among the list of diseases I have not found it, thanks.
August 20th, 2011 at 13:39
Hi,
unfortunately I can not think of anything about the possible pathology related to this white film.
I invite readers to contribute their hypotheses.
October 2nd, 2011 at 16:49
the problem and why I 15000 seedlings of tomato variety '"belize"
this demand and maturing in the fruit conpare the fovea and in time you go to accentuantosi.
I would know if you give me an answer to this problem I would be grateful.
October 23rd, 2011 at 02:54
Hello, sorry for the delay in response.
If the problem is that of a zone of the fruit that presents itself yellow, as immature, and indurated, the problem can be an excessive exposure to light of the sun, or a lack of potassium. There are cultivars more resistant to this problem, try asking at the garden / nursery where you buy the seeds.
