National exhibition of winter camellia
The Lake Maggiore in the heart of winter blooms. On 5 and 6 December in Verbania, on the occasion of the Ninth National Exhibition of the Camellia winter
the nineteenth-century Villa Giulia and its park on the lake will be colored petals of thousands of camellias: the camellia Hiryu from red to pink camellia Cleopatra, the White Camelia Hinode Gumo, not forgetting the little flowers of Camellia sinensis, better known by which yields the tea leaves.
The IX shows the camellia winter is sponsored by Flowers Typical Lake Maggiore (first Consortium in growing camellias in Europe with over one hundred companies) in collaboration with the Municipality of Verbania. He has the patronage of the Italian Society of Camelia and support of the Piedmont Region, Province and Chamber of Commerce of Verbania, Lake District Tourism, Garden Club Verbania, Verbania and Avis VCO Training.
Native to Japan and probably introduced to the West by Buddhist monks, the camellia winter since 1800 has found on the western shore of Lake Maggiore ideal soil and climate, so as to become an excellent production (under the name Flowers Typical of Lake Maggiore), demand in Italy and abroad for abundant blooms between October and February and for the delicate fragrances.
Growers, owners of the largest private gardens open to the public (the Borromean Islands, Villa Taranto, Villa Pallavicino, ...), also collectors of neighboring Switzerland will compete in Verbania to expose the most beautiful varieties of this plant.
Great expectations for the staging of spectacular flowers of camellia signed by Elio Savioli: over one hundred varieties - including notes, rare and unusual - and all nomenclate being refined floral arrangements.
After the success of the camellia Winter Olympics in Turin 2006 (official flower of the event) and Camellia "Princess Grace" dedicated to the unforgettable Grace Kelly, this year the attention is brought to the Camellia Vernalis "Yuletide" which with its color bright red is an ideal proposal for a Christmas present. This strain, selected in the U.S. in the 60s. in our atmosphere has a constant bloom all winter with a peak during the Christmas period, the plant has a compact habit that is well suited as a potted plant is small, and as a specimen of terraces or gardens.
The Yuletide camellia has been studied, along with 50 other cultivars, a team from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Land Management, University of Turin. After three years of research and experiments in collaboration with the Consortium of Local Flowers of Lake Maggiore, has been developing the monograph "The Winter Camellias", published by the Piedmont Region. This is the first complete text and precise on winter-flowering camellias which aims to bridge the knowledge of this species, hitherto little known. The volume, intended for specialists and enthusiasts, will premiere at the authors Villa Giulia Saturday, December 5 at 15.30. After the tea will be served by the Garden Club of Verbania.
At Villa Giulia, you can buy varieties of camellias from major nurseries of Lake Maggiore and get information and advice on their cultivation directly from growers, and flower-themed books will be offered at the Library book shop set up by Alberti. Saturday and Sunday afternoon there will be a workshop for children to learn about camellias and their perfumes. The camellias are not, in fact, typically fragrant. Among the exceptions to the Camellia lutchuensis, considered the most fragrant, and therefore used in breeding programs. The only camellia to have a wide range of varieties that give off different scents is Camellia sasanqua, the small but intense and enveloping scent.
As usual, the exhibition of Verbania camellia will be combined with a sideshow. During the 300 years since the birth of the oldest perfume in the world Maison - Flour - producer of Eau de Cologne, the organizers have decided to pay homage to the inhabitants of the area of Lake Maggiore, which since the seventeenth wrote the history of this popular fragrance.
The exhibition "300 years of Eau de Cologne", prepared by the City of Santa Maria Maggiore and School of Fine Arts Rossetti Valentini, illustrates through panels, antique objects and documents the extraordinary saga of generations of perfumers who left the Valley Vigezzo in search of fortune found fame and wealth to become official suppliers of emperors and queens. The "formula", invented in the seventeenth century by Gian Paolo Feminis of Crana (1666-1736) as "aqua mirabilis" healing properties and later "eau de toilette", was an important step in the nineteenth century with Giovanni Maria Farina (1786 -1864), a skilled tradesman at the point to be considered among his best customers Napoleon Bonaparte and Queen Victoria. Even today, the eau de cologne is the eighth generation of the proposed Farina of Cologne, and Roger & Gallet (now Yves Saint Laurent Beauté).
Talking about perfume, a space will be dedicated to fragrances and cosmetics to the camellia of Lake Maggiore. These are the finest creations proposed by Acqua di Stresa, which for years favors the use of flowers beloved by Coco Chanel.
As part of the Ninth National Exhibition of the Camellia courses will be organized wine tasting Piedmontese payable on demand (Info: Tourist Office Municipality of Verbania Tel 0323 503 249).
The camellia also beautify the city of Verbania. To commemorate Francis Ardizzoia known florist who died prematurely, there will be a flower competition reserved for professional florists who will compete in making floral.
